Families in Poverty
In Pierce County, the percentage of families living in poverty has increased by about 1% of the total households since 2000. According to the 2008 American Community Survey, which is a three year estimate using data from 2006 to 2008 surveys, 15,756 of the estimated 193,494 families in Pierce County lived below the federal poverty line compared to 13,574 in 2000—that’s approximately 8% of estimated families. Pierce County has a higher poverty rate than the rest of the state of Washington as a whole (7.9%). Other Washington state urban counties like ours (Spokane County and Snohomish County) are also shown for comparison. The 2008 American Community Survey estimates that Snohomish County has a family poverty rate of 5.4%, while Spokane County is estimated to have a family poverty rate of 8.6%.
