Homeownership in Pierce County is comparable, though slightly lower, than similar counties in Washington.  Currently, there are 291,323 households in Pierce County compared to 260,800 counted in the 2000 Census, a 12% increase. Between 2000 and 2009, homeownership as a percentage of all households in the county stayed the same at 63.5% owner occupied.  However, the total number of owner occupied households grew by over 19,000.

Home Ownership by Race

Note:  It can be confusing when looking at the race and ethnicity data for Pierce County, when taking into account that the US Census Bureau has classified Hispanic as an ethnicity and not a race.  Because of this, a person of Hispanic origin could select any of the available race options.  Additionally, no comparative data is available for ethnicity prior to and including the 2000 Census.

White Not-Hispanic, White Alone, and Asian households have comparable homeownership rates to the aggregate homeownership rate for the county in 2010, which was 64%.  Black, American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN), Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Asian Pacific Islander (NHAPI), Other, and mixed race (Two or More) all are well behind White and Asian homeownership rates.    White Alone, Black, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) had negative growth in homeownership rates for the period 2000 to 2010.

Put another way, nearly 7 out of 10 White households live in their own home compared to less than 4 out of 10 African Americans live in their own home.
